The other day I was reading on a blog about an activity jar for kids inside which are pieces of paper labeled with things for them to do. So I pulled out an empty candy jar and many scraps of paper, and the children and I got to thinking. We went through every toy, every craft, and just about any fun thing we could think of to put in the jar. Since then, the kids have been enjoying the random activities. So far, they have played doctor/dentist, hide and seek, Legos, had quiet time (in which I took a nap), and made a video clip. They've also been having a lot of fun on their own, but they really enjoy pulling from the jar.
On the morning after our Girls Night In, they pulled the Legos activity. After making sure there was a clean floor to play on, we pulled out our huge stash of Legos. For all you Lego collectors out there, I would like to brag a little on my college find. About 10 years ago, I decided to have a Lego birthday party for Jake (I know... it sounds corny for college kids... but hey, we had fun). As his birthday drew near, I hit the area yard sales just hoping to find some Legos to add to our collection. Well, I hit the jackpot. A high school student was selling his whole collection - this giant tub below - for $50. It took me about 2 seconds flat to fork over the money. The tub was full of all name brand Legos with tons of special pieces and characters: like a whole pirate ship set, some Star Wars figures, spaceship pieces, etc. When you toss in all the Legos we already had, we now have quite a stash.
Some of our original collection:
The older three kids had fun with the Legos while I tried to keep Will out of the way in the living room (with a movie). Normally I will make him play with his siblings, but in the case of Legos, he tends to ruin creations and that can lead to much fighting and many tears.
They like to make 'collections' with the special Lego pieces. On this boat are steering wheels, cannons, pirate treasure, and special hairpieces:Bella built a house and finally found something to do with the special pyramid that Jake had built MANY months ago and which has since been sitting in the box. (She added onto the pyramid to make it big enough to cover the house.)
Bella is in a half-blink state... she has the hardest time with the camera flash!
Yay for Lego Time!
