Happy Birthday, Jacob!

Last month my Jacob celebrated his 5th - yes, fifth - birthday. Wow. 'Five' seems like the big league to me. Jacob is playing his first season of soccer, he will play his first season of T-ball in the spring, and he will start Kindergarten in the fall. So many milestones packed into one year!

If I had to pick a few descriptors for Jacob, at the top of the list would be sweet. Jacob has a sweet spirit and I love that he still gives me all the hugs and kisses I want from him. When he is calm he can be so gentle, and I love catching glimpses of this especially when he is around animals. Just last night while the rest of the family was sitting on the couches watching a movie, I spied Jacob down on the floor just petting Sarah ever so softly. Sweetly. Yet as I type this, I can see people who have spent time around Jacob shaking their heads in disagreement, because most of the time, Jacob is just pure energy. He plays hard and loves to be in constant motion. He has been known to shoot perfect strangers with his guns (hands) while making the appropriate sound effects. He plays Jedi Jacob on a daily basis. He runs around like a ninja with a sword sticking out of the back of his shirt. In fact, he runs around all. the. time. Sometimes I wonder if he is capable of walking.

I could go on and on about my wonderful son, but I will stop for now. I am so thankful that he calls me mommy. I thank God for Jacob and I look forward to the year ahead with my five-year-old!

Early morning photo with my birthday boy:
We lucked out this year in that Jake had the day off of work for Jacob's birthday. I gave Jacob a few options on fun things to do, and he chose to go bowling. This was the first time we had been bowling as a family since we lived in Hawaii... so we're talking at least 2 1/2 years ago. We had a blast together, and I'm already looking forward to more bowling in our future.
After bowling, we headed home for dinner, presents, and cake. Jacob got a new Star Wars game for his Leapster and Will was pretty interested. He's a smart kid... he knows that anything Jacob gets is practically 50% his!
He also got a set of G.I. Joe figurines. The boys have recently really gotten into role-playing with figurines... from Star Wars to cars to trains to soldiers... the stories and scenarios that they come up with is highly entertaining.
Smile, son!
We had to purchase Jacob's birthday cake from a store this year because our oven was broken. Even Bella remarked that this was the first time we had ever bought a cake for one of our family celebrations. It is tradition for me to make any cake of choice for the birthday honoree (following their dinner of choice, as well). I have made vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, and rainbow cakes... cupcakes, pies, and even rum cake for Jake. I was a bit bummed about the broken oven, but at least the cake turned out to be pretty delicious.
Happy birthday to my big boy Jacob!
